Austin schools honor Veterans with breakfast

Veterans and students gathered together for breakfast Monday morning at Austin Public Schools in a next-day recognition of Veteran’s Day. The annual event happened at all four elementary schools, plus Ellis Middle School and Austin High School.

At Neveln Elementary, some veterans said they hoped to meet with students they knew while they were lining up to get food.

“I got a granddaughter coming,” said veteran Charles Rector.

About 30 people had already gathered for breakfast at Neveln by 7:30 a.m., though kitchen staff expected to see more come later. More than 200 people participated across all schools at last year’s breakfast, about 70 of which were veterans, said Marie Knutson, Neveln’s head cook.

“It’s very nice what the school does for us,” said veteran Clayton Oehler.
