Hayfield can’t hold off Eagles’ bats in 10-3 loss Tuesday

HAYFIELD — The Hayfield softball team just didn’t have an answer for Rochester Lourdes’ slugger Sam Macken in both team’s softball opener in Hayfield Tuesday.

Hayfield pitcher Jocelyn Sanvick pitches in the first inning against Rochester Lourdes Tuesday afternoon in Hayfield.

Macken finished with seven RBIs on the day and she broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning with a two-out grand slam to deep center field.

“She kind of took the wind out of our sails,” Hayfield head coach Jana Wagner said.

The Vikings (0-1 overall) had tied the game in the fifth when Meg Tapp drove an RBI-single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

But it was the runs that Hayfield didn’t knock in that cost them in the loss. Hayfield, which was playing without three senior starters who were out due to not having enough practices in due to a class trip, stranded a total of nine runners on base as pitcher Morgan Meiers finished with 11 strikeouts for the Eagles (1-0 overall).

“Overall we did fine for our first game,” Wagner said. “But we need to work on our hitting. We had way too many times where we looked at third strikes.”
