Kids from the family literacy program and Kids Korner gather around for storytime Tuesday at the Community Learning Center. The kids, over the next three months, will get to take a book home per month as part of the Reading Rocks program.

Several Austin early childhood centers reaped the benefits of a large, area book donation from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF).

SMIF, in partnership with ABDO Publishing, donated 2,400 books to area AmeriCorps LEAP partner site classrooms on Tuesday. Donation recipients in Austin included the Austin Community Learning Center, Parenting Resource Center and Semcac Head Start.

The book donation is valued at more than $45,000, according to a news release. The release said each child received a book in a take-home bag, along with learning resources and educational information for their parents.
