Mower County is making a run to claim best talent at the Minnesota State Fair.

Bret Canny, 15, of Brownsdale, won the Mower County Fair’s talent show and passed the State Fair’s first round of acts Tuesday night. He’s been playing the guitar for five years; and this year, his talent for playing the song “Drifting” by Andy McKee, which features a non-traditional way of plucking and slapping the guitar, has carried him a long way.

“He’s a very young musician on his way up because he is versatile,” said Vandy Newman, Mower County Fair talent show coordinator.

Though Bret has been getting recognition for his guitar skills, he actually specializes in the piano, which he’s been playing for 10 years. He plans to make his career in music.

“Sound production, or movie score writing would be awesome, too,” he said.

If Bret wins his next competition 7 p.m. Saturday night, he will go on to play in front of the grandstands at the State Fair on Sunday. A video of Bret’s performance at the State Fair can be seen at youtube.com by searching “blcanny.”
