The Mower County Veterans Memorial will soon have a new look.

Members of the veteran’s memorial committee spent Thursday afternoon comparing two eagle statues to stand atop a pedestal at the intersection of Main Street and Second Avenue NE.

One of the eagles will be purchased as part of a fundraising effort by the committee as part of its continued effort to improve the memorial that was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2010.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s something we hold in high esteem,” said Norm Hecimovich, chair of the committee.

Jeff Anderson of Anderson Memorial, who sculpted one of the eagles, said he enjoys helping groups set up memorials. Anderson also designed the artwork for Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial in Rochester.

“We do a lot of this kind of work, and I enjoy it,” Anderson said.

Hecimovich said the committee is will continue its fundraising effort for pavers honoring veterans. Currently, Hecimovich said, there are 792, but the group hopes to get to 1,056.

Pavers are $300 and can honor any local veteran, dead or alive.
