Best Bets: Shootin’ deer, holiday cheer

The fun begins and continues in other regards this weekend in Austin and the area. So if you don’t take kindly to deer but do enjoy the holiday season, read further.

Quiet time in the woods

The firearm deer season continues through Sunday in Minnesota. Hunters, take this opportunity to fill that tag if you haven’t done so, and put some meat in the freezer.

Wine snobs welcome

For those without a gun or hunting license, check out the holiday wine show from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday. The show, at Lansing Corners north of Austin on Highway 218, features 150 different wines, entertainment and hors d’oeuvres. Admission is $10.

Can’t wait for X-Mas

For those who don’t have a gun, hunting license and can’t drink wine, check out the best Christmas pageant ever. Seriously. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” put on by Matchbox Children’s Theatre, will open 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE. Adults get in for $7. Ages 14 and younger are $5. The show will also be at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

This is our town

Or, go to Pacelli’s auditorium for “Our Town,” which will be at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and a maximum of $15 per family.

Other events

Hey, Norwegians, you are in for a treat. OK, so it’s two years away, but Hallinglag is coming. The Scandinavian get-together will be in Austin in fall 2014. So if your ancestors are from Hallingdal you sure bet you’re invited.
