Families and children have an opportunity to get insight on what it’s like to be a police officer in Austin this Tuesday.

The Austin Police Department’s National Night Out will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Bandshell Park.

“It’s a great event for police officers and the public to interact and work as a team,” Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger said.

National Night Out is designed to get more people to interact with police and strengthen community ties. There will be police, fire, state patrol and ambulance vehicles on display for children to tour, along with a K-9 demo at 6 p.m.

Krueger hopes that people recognize that although they wear uniforms and use special equipment, there’s another aspect to police officers.

“We’re people too,” he said.

Citizens are welcome to voice concerns they have, share crime tips with officers and learn more about the officers that serve their community.

“We just hope that the public will come out and see the officers that work here,” Krueger said.

There will be free hot dogs, chips and a beverage as well.
