The boys were back on top at Mayo Clinic Health System – Albert Lea and Austin last year.

In 2015, 776 babies were born at the two medical centers — 410 in Austin and 366 in Albert Lea. Of the 776, 401 were boys and 375 were girls. The total number of babies dropped from 814 in 2013, when there 422 girls and 391 boys at the clinics.

“We have been proactive in supporting the education of staff and families, adhering to the ‘Baby Friendly Hospital’ principles,” said Nancy Hoversten, nurse manager, Austin’s Women’s Special Care Unit in a press release. “We strive to support the importance of the non-invasive sacred hours immediately following delivery, allowing for baby’s nine instinctual stages of newborn behavior to take place while promoting bonding and the initiation of breast feeding within the newborn’s natural habitat.

We maintain high standards of care with an emphasis on patient safety while providing a warm and inviting family atmosphere.”

Albert Lea’s Baby Place nurse manager, Amanda Forman, said special care and attention is provided to each patient.

“Our focus is family-centered care,” she said in a press release. “We are concerned about the physical and emotional well-being of the mother, her infant, significant others, family members, and other support persons. We continue to offer skin-to-skin time following deliveries to capture the uninterrupted time for bonding between mother and baby. This has become a significant patient satisfier.”
