An annual city art prize was recently awarded to an unconventional winner: The Hormel Institute.

The Austin City Council gave the Austin ArtWorks Festival City Purchase Award — a $500 prize — to The Hormel Institute earlier this week.

The Institute displayed several microscopic images of cells and tissues at the Austin ArtWorks Festival. The winning one was of an overexpression of Cox2, a cancer-related protein, in rat oral cancer.

“I think it’s a really beautiful image,” Dr. Ted Hinchliffe of the Institute told the council.

The microscopic image came from Dr. Zigang Dong and Dr. Ann Bode’s “Molecular & Cellular Biology” research section.

The piece will be hung in City Hall.

Council members Jeremy Carolan and Michael Jordal picked the Institute’s piece for the annual award.
