The Cedar River Watershed District’s Waterways Month events will conclude this week with two public presentations focused on imagery — past and present — of the local waterways.

On Tuesday, CRWD public outreach coordinator Tim Ruzek, also a co-chair of the Austin Vision 2020 Waterways Committee, will present “Historic Images of the Cedar River” from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Austin Public Library’s large meeting room. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch as well as any old waterways photos they might have to show.

Ruzek has gathered more than 100 historic photographic and artistic images for a PowerPoint presentation that starts in the Ramsey Mill Pond area north of Austin and proceeds downstream through Austin, highlighting the Downtown Mill Pond, old Hormel Foods plant, the Fourth Avenue Northeast Dam, Roosevelt Bridge, Lafayette Park and more.

The presentation includes aerial images and old plat maps to show how the surrounding land and course of the river have changed over time, especially in the North Main area near the Downtown Mill Pond, which used to be a state park in the early 1900s.

Ruzek gave a similar presentation a year ago for the watershed district’s Waterways Month but since has added numerous images.

On Thursday, long-time Austin photographer Nate Howard will feature his large collection of photos that he has taken along the Cedar River and other local waterways during a public presentation from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the library.

Howard also will share the stories behind many of the images, which include a variety of photographs showing Austin’s record flooding to people enjoying the waterways to beautiful nature scenes in the watershed.
