Larry Matthes, 68, Albert Lea

The memorial service for Larry C. Matthes of Albert Lea will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea. Visitation will be one hour before the service. The Rev. Joel Vano will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded.
Larry died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin. He was 68 years old.
Larry was born Dec. 25, 1944, to Alfred and LuElla (Rupp) Matthes. He graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1963. Larry then joined the Air Force and served for four years. He flew with the Blue Angels and was crew chief on their C130 plane and also was their backup and support. After being discharged he entered Dunwoody College of Technology and learned to be a tool and die maker. After graduating from there, he worked for Queen Stove which later became Scottman for 20 years. He then worked for Lou-Rich and Streater. He also worked as grounds keeper for Diamond Jo Casino. Larry belonged to the American Legion, Eagles Club and Moose Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle, bowling, dancing and listening to country music.
Larry is survived by his significant other, Gail Armstrong of Albert Lea; brother, Gene (Mary) Matthes of Albert Lea; nieces, Michele (Mike) VonHagen of Iowa and Cassie Matthes of Albert Lea; great nephew, Taylor of Jackson; great nieces, Calleigh of Iowa and Kennady of Albert Lea; and adoptive daughter, Cindy Thompson of Perry, Kan.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and LuElla Matthes.
