Even though Austin’s first newborn of 2012 arrived on the second day of the new year, he was by no means delaying his debut: He was born two weeks before his due date.

James Allen Flerlage, son of Lisa and Tony Flerlage of Austin, was born 7:12 a.m. Monday at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

“He was kind of a surprise,” his mother said about the early birth.

Despite the early arrival, James still weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces, and measured 19 inches. Family and friends were already enjoying his presence on Monday afternoon.

Tony and Lisa were unaware James was going to be the first newborn in Austin in 2012.

“When we checked in, they told us that,” Lisa said.

James is Tony and Lisa’s first child, so they weren’t focusing on any first-of-the-year records. They were focused on having a healthy baby.

Though James is only a day old, his parents are excited for many things to come.

“Watching him grow and learn,” will be exciting, Lisa said.
