Joann Beverly (Perkins) Smith, 83, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at Madonna Towers in Rochester.

Joann was born July 13, 1932, in Mapleview, Minnesota, to Carrol and Florence (Hamsness) Perkins. She graduated from high school. On Nov. 30, 1950, she was united in marriage to Richard Arthur Smith at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. Joann resided in the Austin area for most of her life.

Joann was a loving wife and mother and a St. Edward’s Parish volunteer. She worked in the Hormel office before having her children, was involved in Scouts, St. Edward’s choir, and card club, was treasurer of the Philomathian, worked on the St. Edward’s Hospitality crew, loved flower gardening, was the Queen of Hearts at Madonna Towers, loved her family and dear friends, and was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include eight children: Thomas Smith (Mary), Silver Bay, Minnesota, Patricia Smith Lastine (Wesley), Mason City, Iowa, Rebecca Smith Krulish (Greg), Lyle, Minnesota, Kelly Smith (Silvia), St. Peter, Minnesota, Margaret Smith Machacek (Steven), Dexter, Minnesota, Peter Smith (Janna), Rochester, Minnesota, Jeffrey Smith (Jerene), Mendota, Minnesota, Jerome Smith (Sarah), Burnsville, Minnesota; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Smith; parents, Carrol and Florence Perkins; two sisters: Ladonna Perkins Miller and Shirley Perkins Trepanier.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Don Schmitz and Deacon John Kluczny officiating.
