Donald D. Zabel, 90, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2015, at St. Mary’s Care Center, Winsted, Minnesota.

Donald Duane Zabel was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Harris, Minnesota, the son of Helmuth and Daisy (Newling) Zabel. Following high school Donald served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He returned to the Austin area where he was employed by Austin Public Schools as a painter. Donald was married to Mary Jean Blanchard on Jan. 12, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anita May Smith and Louise Beeman.

Donald is survived by his wife, Mary Jean Blanchard, Austin; nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Dennis Tamke officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
