After growing up in Austin, Parr moved to the Twin Cities and eventually Duluth, where he’s a veteran of the town’s music scene. Parr traveled to rural North Carolina to record his latest album with producer Phil Cook.

“I think it turned out really, really nice,” Parr told the Herald a few days before his last Austin show, a Nov. 26, 2014, performance at the Veterans of Foreign Wars club.

The album was recorded in an old tobacco farm barn converted into a recording studio, and Parr said it was an idyllic, wooded setting that was a great place to record.

It’s the first album Parr has recorded outside of Minnesota and his first to feature a full band.

Parr said Red House has “always held an exalted place” in his heart because of the label’s connection to the Midwest and other blues, folk and roots singers.

Parr is launching a tour that goes through April and includes a date this Saturday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with fellow Minnesota players Trampled by Turtles.

Parr still has family in Austin, and he returns frequently for shows, including a performance at last year’s Austin ArtWorks Festival.

“Stumpjumper” is Parr’s 13th studio album.
