EDF working on 50-MW wind farm

The 100-megawatt Pleasant Valley Wind Farm isn’t the only wind farm project in the works in Mower County.

The county board unanimously approved a permit Tuesday for EDF Renewables to build a 60-meter meteorological tower in Lodi Township to measure wind and weather.

EDF is in the early stages of a project that, if it moves forward, would develop 50 megawatts of energy —about 25 towers, according to associate project developer Leanne Russell.

Russell and GIS analyst Rachel Clement attended Tuesday’s meeting but only briefly spoke to board.

Next up, EDF is working on environmental assessments and state permitting, though Russell and Clement declined to outline a timeline on the project.

“We are moving forward with the project, so that’s a good sign,” Clement said.

EDF Renewable Energy, based in San Diego, has a history with Mower County, owning the Wapsipinicon Wind Project near Dexter, and the company developed a project near Grand Meadow but sold it.

Mower County currently has 253 wind turbines. Renewable Energy Systems Amercias’ Pleasant Valley Wind Farm, which is currently under construction, is set to add about 100 next year — 88 of them in Mower County.
