Best Bets: In tune with art and nature

It’s time to get in touch with both the arts and nature. The next week offers some peaceful, yet thought-provoking and even exciting opportunities. Something for every generation awaits.

1. Starving Artists

Feed a starving artist. OK, not literally, but Austin High School is holding its Feed a Starving Artist drama dessert theater at 6 p.m. Friday in Christgau Hall. A silent auction, music and desserts will all help raise funds for the AHS Drama Department.

2. Classic car show

Every year, those cars get a little older. But that’s a good thing for the classic car enthusiast. The Austin Post 1216 VFW, 300 Fourth Ave. NE, is holding its annual car show from noon to 3 p.m. this Saturday in the VFW parking lot. Registration is at 8 a.m., and the show will shut down the streets directly west and south of the VFW. Participants can register a car for $10 and each additional car for $5. A silent auction will accompany the event, while prizes will be given away about every 15 minutes.

3. Observatory

Take some time to see what lies beyond, at the Solafide Observatory. The observatory is holding a free public viewing 9 p.m. Saturday at 180th St. south of Austin. And that’s only one of several chances to see the stars and planets throughout the summer.

4. Piccadilly Circus

Bad case of the Mondays? Surely a circus could fix that. The Piccadilly Circus will open at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Crane Pavilion, 700 12th St. SW. More showings start at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m.

5. Rotary tree walk

Still need something to get through the midweek? Try a tree walk. Though it won’t teach you how to walk like a tree, you will brush up on those tree identification skills — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rotary Park. Another walk takes place at the same time and place Thursday.

Other events

Other events of note include the opening for citizens to file for public offices on May 22, and several interesting bits at the Austin Public Library.
