The Austin bicycling team is set to get things started as the team will host its season-opening meet at Schindler’s Way Trail this Saturday and Sunday.

The middle school races will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and the high school races will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Austin has nearly 30 riders out for the team this season and many of them are in high school.

A lot of work has gone into the 3.75 mile track to get it ready for the race this weekend.

“It rides over well, but we’ve had a lot of weather challenges this year. We had a little too much water,” Austin head coach Gareth Hataye said. “We’ve been trying to remediate some of those challenges. The course looks great for the weekend.”

This is the first of seven races for Austin this season and it is the fifth straight year that Austin has hosted a bike race.

There are approximately 2,000 students on bicycling teams in the state of Minnesota this fall.
