The Austin 16U softball team has been learning a lot this summer, and Maggie Sullivan is starting to learn how to read the defense.

Sullivan used her speed to her advantage as she stole home to score the winning run in Austin’s District contest over Pine Island 3-2 in five innings at Todd Park Wednesday. Pine Island took the non-district game 16-4 in four innings.

Sullivan used a bunt single to lead off the inning and took off for home after Pine Island threw to third in an attempt to pick her off.

“I was watching the pitcher and catcher and I was waiting for my time,” Sullivan said. “I made my move and it worked out.”

Austin scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning of its win to go up 2-0 when Leslie Rodriguez singled in a run. Pine Island tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth.

Austin coach Alonzo Rodriguez said that Austin 16U has gained some camaraderie this summer.

“It’s going pretty good,” Alonzo said. “We’re getting the girls to communicate and they’ve all bonded together well.”

Austin will wrap up its regular season next week.
