Kari Singelstad, 89

Kari Singelstad, 89, of rural Northwood, Iowa, died on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.

Kari Singelstad was born May 1, 1929, in the rural area of Uggdalseidet on the island of Tysnes in Norway, to Kristoffer and Nilla (Bekken) Haaheim. Kari was baptized and confirmed at Uggdal Lutheran Church in Uggdal, Norway. After finishing her schooling in 1950, Kari decided to come and explore America. She traveled the country working and living in Mason City, Iowa, Westfield, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and Tacoma, Washington.

On Sept. 29, 1956, Kari was united in marriage to Alfred Singelstad at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. This union lasted 58 years. The couple made their home and farmed the Singelstad family farm, where they raised four children. Kari was a member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church for 63 years. She taught Sunday school and was very involved in the Naomi Circle, Ladies Aid and church quilting. Kari and Alfred were custodians of the church for over 30 years. Church was the cornerstone of her life. Kari was also a member of Sons of Norway Nordic Lodge 1-502 for 39 years. She enjoyed baking, (especially lefse), gardening, reading, photography, letter writing and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. She made several return trips to Norway over the years. She truly loved her husband Alfred and her entire family, especially her seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Kari is survived by her children, Kermit (Brenda) Singelstad, Lake Mills, Iowa, Michael (Debra) Singelstad, Owatonna, Minnesota, Monica (Frank ) Kubesh, Austin, Minnesota, and Kevin (Robin) Singelstad, Lake Mills; grandchildren, Kristoffer (Casey) Singelstad, Lake Mills, Chelsea (Michael Will) Singelstad, Fairmont, Minnesota, Curtis (Chelsea) Singelstad, Northwood, Benjamin Kubesh, West Hollywood, California, Karla Kubesh, Ames, Iowa, Anna Singelstad, Lake Mills, and Bianca Singelstad, Lake Mills; sisters-in-law, Helen DeLooper, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Norma Adams, Lake Mills, and Magnhild Vik Haaheim, Rong, Norway; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Kari was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; her parents, Kristoffer and Nilla Haaheim; brother, Johannes Haaheim; sister, Solveig Haaheim; brothers-in-law, Charles Flugum, Norman Eide, Norman DeLooper, Curtis Amundson, James Adams, Raymond Singelstad and Hans Singelstad; and sisters-in-law, Marhta Flugum, Bertha Eide and Oma Lee Phillips.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019, at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, 705 Silver Lake Road, Northwood, IA 50459, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main St. in Lake Mills and will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Silver Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery.
