Grant Blackwood returned to his hometown to share some of the tips that have helped him become a bestselling author.

On Thursday, Blackwood presented “Secrets of Writing a Blockbuster Novel,” a workshop full of techniques he’s gained over his 29 years as an author, starting with determination.

“Persistence is everything,” he said. “Without persistence, success is unlikely.”

The class covered topics such as a writers mindset, the difference between story and plot, outlining stories, the premise line of stories, common elements and more.

Blackwood drew a lot from his own experiences — “everything that has gotten me to my goal of being a successful commercial genre author, from my rights and wrongs,” he said.

Blackwood will also make an appearance at Sweet Reads on Friday from noon to 2 p.m. for a book singing and meet and greet. To close a weekend home, Blackwood will be speaking on Saturday during the Austin ArtWorks Festival.

“It’s good to be home, I’ve lived in a lot of places, but I consider this my home,” Blackwood said.
