CANNON FALLS — Authorities are cracking down on people jumping off a 50-foot cliff into Lake Byllesby in southeastern Minnesota.

Goodhue County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Kris Johnson says social media is driving growing popularity in jumping off the dangerous cliff. Sgt. Scott Powers says 73 people have been fined for trespassing so far this year on the site owned by the Boy Scouts of America.

Powers says the number of fines is down from a couple years ago due to tougher enforcement, but he says the focus is draining patrol efforts by the sheriff’s office.

Northern Star Council executive director John Andrews tells the Star Tribune that the Boy Scouts are happy about the enforcement. He says they dealt with the problem 15 to 20 years ago, and just learned recently it had arisen again.
