The family and friends of Tyler Brady are hoping to continue a hockey scholarship program in his name, in part through a fundraiser set for this Saturday.

The second annual Tyler Brady hockey scholarship fund booster will take place starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Eagles Club.

“He would be proud to be part of this, to have his name associated with this,” Michelle Brady, Tyler’s mother, said.

Tyler Brady died on Feb. 10, 2012, as a result of an exercise accident. The 22-year-old spent much of his youth playing peewee hockey in Austin Youth Hockey, and his family and friends banded together soon after his death to create a hockey scholarship fund to honor him.

“We decided a portion of the memorials would go to start this fund,” Michelle said. “It’s a separate account, we siphon it through Austin Youth Hockey and we maintain it.”

The fund gave away $4,500 in youth hockey scholarships this winter for area families who want to participate in Austin Youth Hockey. The fund was able to award a scholarship to every family who applied to help pay for registration and equipment expenses.

The fundraiser begins with a silent auction at 2 p.m. Saturday, with $7 burger baskets from 4 to 6:30 p.m. There will also be 50/50 drawings, meat boards and live music from the Bissen’s, Joey Kroc and Nate Johnson. The fundraiser is coinciding with the second annual Tyler Brady Memorial Hockey Tournament, as well.

All proceeds will go to replenish the Tyler Brady scholarship fund.

“Tyler played all through his youth, he played in youth hockey from four until bantams, and he would want other people to have a chance to do the same,” Michelle said.
