Vision 2020 is getting busy.

The community improvement initiative is putting the downtown plaza stage project on hold while members of the Downtown Austin community work on a large downtown revitalization project, according to Laura Helle, Vision 2020 director of creative vision.

“I can’t say much other than that there is a project brewing, and we’re keeping our eye on it,” Helle said. “It will be very beneficial to downtown.”

Helle said the revitalization project was moving forward far more rapidly than anticipated. The stage project, which organizers had hoped to finish by mid-May, was delayed for several weeks by the weather and other Vision 2020 developments. Riverland Community College carpentry students were set to work on the stage as well, but the delays forced Riverland to withdraw from the project as the end of semester nears.

Helle said the committee decided to put the stage project on hold for now, and organizers still intend to move forward with a stage once the revitalization project moves forward. There’s no timetable on when the stage project will resume, but organizers say Riverland could pick it back up once the fall semester begins.

“This is kind of a case where community transformation is a little messy,” Helle said. “We’re excited to see things happen and taking things as they come.”

Organizers will still host a free outdoor concert on Wednesday, May 31, however. Six Mile Grove will play on Main Street at 7 p.m., with the band Cosmic playing at 5 p.m. Food vendors, downtown merchants, and an Austin Jaycees beer garden will be at the street dance as well.
