Another night of bitter cold is on the way, and a significant amount of snow may follow.

A wind chill advisory is in effect through noon today, which will likely start again tonight and through midday Wednesday, according to Tom Stangeland, hydrometeorological technician with the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis.

“It’s almost like winter is starting to make itself known in the area,” he said.

Wind gusts have reached 37 mph at the Austin Municipal Airport in the past several hours. Tuesday’s high temperature may only reach 6 degrees, and the overnight low may dip to 8 below. NWS reports wind chill values will continually hit 20 below or less.

Furthermore, NWS issued a winter storm and hazardous weather outlook for Thursday and Friday. Stangeland said the Austin area could receive about 6 inches of snow from Thursday to Friday. There is a chance of blowing, drifting snow.

Temperatures may begin easing by Sunday; however, that may not be the end of the winter bombardment.

“Pay attention for these upcoming storms,” Stangeland said. “There might be another system moving in the first part of next week.”
