A public hearing regarding Curt Rude has been scheduled with the Austin School Board.

The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 16 in the district office’s conference room, which is attached to Austin High School, 401 Third Ave. NW.

The exact nature of the hearing regarding the controversial school board member is unclear.

Superintendent David Krenz said he is unable to further discuss the hearing until the official resolution is approved at the next meeting of the board on Feb. 8.

The board will not be able to take action during the public hearing, Krenz said.

Any action will be held until their next regular meeting on March 8.

Former Austin police captain and current school board member Rude sued the district and former superintendent Raskin in November. Rude alleges that statements made by Raskin up to two years ago were defamatory and damaging. He seeks at least $50,000, the minimum required in a civil suit.

APS has denied all allegations, asked that Rude recoup any expenses incurred and will seek a dismissal during a motion hearing March 10.

Rude was convicted of fifth-degree felony drug possession and gross misdemeanor interfering with property in official custody in November of 2009, after removing painkillers from the Austin Police Department Evidence Room. He was acquitted of felony theft.

The felony will be removed from his record if he complies with his probation, but the conviction alone was enough to revoke his license.

Rude was officially dismissed as police captain in December and last week said he was in the process of appealing his peace officer license revocation.

Monday, the Police Civil Service Commission ordered that Rude be terminated by the APD.

The next regular meeting of the school board is Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the city council chambers. The board could take action on the Rude hearing at their meeting on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the city hall chambers.
