Best Bets: Fifth annual River Rats Car Show

UPDATE:  Due to a lack of acts, the Nature Talent Show, scheduled for Saturday night at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center has been cancelled.

However, the Nature Art Show is still on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. Stop on out to the nature center from some great nature-themed art and while you’re there take a stroll through the nature center itself.


The Jay C. Hormel Nature Center will host its third annual Nature Art Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The show will feature Midwest nature-inspired artwork from community members of all ages.

Various artwork mediums will consist of drawings, paintings, photographs, fiber works and small sculptures.

Each room in the Interpretive Center will feature a different theme, depending on the number of entries.

The Nature Center will also host its third Natural Community Talent Show at 7 p.m. on Saturday on the outside patio behind the Interpretive Center.

Entrants will have five minutes to put on a nature-themed performance. The number of entrants is limited to the first 12 submissions. Performers are asked to arrive no later than 6:30 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, the talent show will be held at a backup indoor location.

Fifth annual River Rats Car Show

The River Rats will host their fifth annual River Rats Car Show from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Lafayette Park.

This annual event honors U.S. veterans and will feature cool cars, food, games, prizes, crafts, a bounce house, Hot Wheels races for kids and a beer garden. There will also be performances by DJ Todd Kriehn, live music by “Who Let the Momma’s Out” from noon to 2 p.m. and Magician Adam Perry.

The entry fee is $15, but spectators may enter for free.

In case of inclement weather, the event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 18.

• Kids’ Art History Camp, 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Austin ArtWorks Center. With Beth Hamilton. Students will learn about a different artist each day, and then complete a related art project. Featured artist on day four is Keith Haring, project will be creating with drawing and construction paper. Cost $5.
