Violet M. Scott, 87, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, with her loving family by her side.

Violet was born on April 26, 1929, in rural Bloomington, Wisconsin, the daughter of William H. Smith and Elma (Ball) Smith. She graduated from Bloomington High School in 1947 and then attended Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, and the University of Wisconsin in Platteville.

She was united in marriage to Gordon D. Scott on Sept. 10, 1950, at the United Methodist Church in Bloomington. As newlyweds, they made their first home in Austin, Minnesota, where Gordon was employed by the George A. Hormel Co. in the Livestock Buying Department. In 1951, Gordon was transferred to Winnebago, Minnesota, where they were blessed with the birth of their first two children, Mark and DeAnne. In 1953, they moved to Madelia, Minnesota, when Gordon was assigned to open and manage a new livestock buying station. While living in Madelia, they were blessed with two more children, Douglas and Jane. In 1964, the family moved to Austin, Minnesota, where Violet was an active member in the Westminster Presbyterian Church and served on the board of the Austin Area Art Center. After receiving her B.S. degree in art at Mankato State University, she taught Art in the Austin Public School system and at Riverland Community College. Violet enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and family gatherings.

Violet is survived by two sons, Mark (Karen) Scott of Blaine, Minnesota, and Douglas (Beverly) Scott of Bloomington, Wisconsin; two daughters, DeAnne (Michael) Pietrs, of Shoreview, Minnesota, and Jane (Jeffrey) Bawek of Albert Lea, Minnesota; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; her two brothers, Ralph and Milton Smith; and sister, Wilma Romaine.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2016, at the Bloomington United Methodist Church, with Reverend Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Burial will be in the Union Lumpkin Cemetery, Bloomington Township. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church. Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Bloomington is assisting the family.
