Painting a scene of the serene

I took a long lunch break and went the Austin YMCA recently before covering a meeting that evening. After a stressful, busy morning, I needed to burn off some energy with a run.
Half-way through my workout, I still felt tense when I switched gears from the Y’s running track to the cardio loft figuring I’d watch a little TV to deprogram.
After several minutes of channel surfing, I stumbled on “The Joy of Painting” on KSMQ Public Television.
Not only did I instantly flash back to childhood moments of watching Bob Ross, but I instantly became engrossed in watching him paint and listening to his calming voice.
The stress just melted away. The painting was so peaceful and simple looking. It looked so attainable.
Now January and February are two busy months for us here at the Herald. Two large special sections — Austin Living and Progress — intersect and create long days that leave a lot on your mind. Plus things like last week’s snow storm leave even more on our plates.
All work places have their stressful, busy season, but it’s helpful to be mindful of it and try to break it how you can.
Every little stress relief helps in a time like this, whether it’s going for a run at the Y or watching someone paint.
