ST. PAUL — The money chase in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District has candidates searching close to home, as in their own wallets.
Four declared candidates for the open seat are their own biggest donors, according to federal campaign reports filed this week. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Friday that self-funding is occurring in both parties.
Democratic usinesswoman Angie Craig raised about $500,000 in the past three months, $375,000 of which was a personal loan. Democratic rival Mary Lawrence has loaned her campaign almost $1.2 million to date.
Former Republican state Sen. John Howe says he has put $500,000 into his campaign as “the opening cost of running for this position.”
Fellow Republican David Gerson lent his campaign $50,000 and raised $3,000 from donors.
Incumbent Rep. John Kline isn’t running again.
