2 girls die after semi strikes minivan

HANLONTOWN, Iowa — Two young girls from Worth County died and four others were injured Tuesday morning after the minivan they were riding in was broadsided by a semi.

Cassidy Stehn, 9, of Northwood, and Hana Riedinger, 12, of Kensett, Iowa, died at Mercy Medical Center from injuries related to the crash, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The van’s driver, Nicole Streets, 22, of Northwood, was also injured.

The State Patrol indicates the minivan was southbound on Worth County Highway S28 at 9:30 a.m. when Streets ran a stop sign at the intersection with Iowa Highway 9 and the van was struck by an eastbound semi driven by Steven Brodersen, 59, of Manly, Iowa. Brodersen was treated for injuries at the scene.

The other girls injured in the minivan were Destiny Bruce, 10, Jaela Parks, 10, Maeghan Petznick, 10, and Hailey Schaefer, 11, all of Northwood.

The report stated all people in both vehicles were wearing their seat belts.

Streets was taking the girls to a canoe outing at Clear Lake, according to the Mason City Globe Gazette.

The crash remains under investigation.
