Furthering the spirit of music

The excerpt below is from the March 25, 1931, Austin Daily Herald:

“Oh, beautiful this Hormel Home

A welcome sound and love abounds

Within thy every wall.”

“The sentiment of this YWCA Club song was verified as members of the Business and Industrial and the Y’s Y’er clubs met together last night for their annual Nation-wide Banquet at the YWCA.”

The first part of this article caught my attention as I didn’t know that the HHH had been immortalized in song.  The article described the event as an opportunity to “further a spirit of unity among employed women in all parts of the world by holding a banquet on the same night.”

Music was a featured part of the program which explains why the lyrics above were written in honor of the lovely setting for the event.  The article reported that “tables were brilliantly lighted with red tapers and elaborately decorated in colors of red, white and blue.”  Song sheets and a program were placed at each spot for the 47 attendees.  The music portion included “Oh Hormel Home the Beautiful” and a vocal solo by Mrs. Arthur Graham accompanied by Miss Mae Wells.  Mrs. Graham sang “One Fine Day” from Madame Butterfly and “The Year’s at the Spring.”

At the close of the article, it stated that “cordial greetings were sent by telegram to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. A. Hormel at Beverly Hills.”  The group felt strongly about continuing to keep the Hormels informed of all the great events that were occurring at their treasured home.

On Tuesday, April 5, another music themed program will be offered at the Hormel Historic Home.  The topic is the Benefits of Music Therapy.  The presentation is being offered by Jane Laine, the Music Therapy Manger at the MacPhail Center for Music.  According to their website www.macphail.org, “Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship with a board certified music therapist. Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used to address physical, emotional, cognitive, communication and social needs of individuals.” This presentation will focus on the benefits of music therapy for all ages and abilities, from premature babies to those at the end of their life and all stages in between.

Please join us at the beautiful Hormel Home to learn how music can benefit your life as it has done throughout history.
