Ethel Mae (Nicol) Sellers, 91, of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday morning, Feb. 23, 2015, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin.

Ethel Mae Quast was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Mower County, Minnesota, to Friedrick Wilhelm (Will) and Vera (McGillvray) Quast. Growing up, she worked on the family farm driving horses and tractors. Ethel Mae was a 1941 graduate of Rose Creek High School before receiving her teaching degree from Winona State University in 1945. She was a high school math teacher in Dodge Center, Elkton, and Frost from 1945 to 1951. On June 10, 1951, Ethel Mae married Max S. Nicol at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin. Max and Ethel Mae owned Nicol’s Toy and Hobbycraft in Austin for 31 years, where she taught craft classes. Max died Feb. 19, 1992. On Jan. 7, 1995, she married Lyle Sellers at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Lyle passed away April 30, 2011. Ethel Mae enjoyed reading, listening to books on audio tape, playing cards and traveling. She was a collector of cups and saucers, did many crafts, and enjoyed gardening, square dancing and playing cards. As a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Ethel Mae belonged to WELCA and taught Sunday school. Over the years, she also gave her time to People Needing People, as a facilitator of the Parkinson’s support group, as an organist at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and as a Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by her children: Jean Nicol (Dr. Charles T.) Jahren of Ames, Iowa, and William (Lisa Widmeyer) Nicol of St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Daniel and Patrick Jahren of Los Angeles, California, Alexander Nicol of Hong Kong, and Madeline Nicol of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents Will and Vera Quast; her first husband Max Nicol; her second husband Lyle Sellers Sr.; and one sister Nella Jean Quast.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin with Todd Portinga, Associate in Ministry, and Chaplain Elizabeth Endicott officiating. Interment will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Elkton, at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin. Memorials can be directed to St. Olaf Lutheran Church or Parkinson’s Research. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
