Alice was born on Feb. 7, 1919, in rural Hartwick, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Romanie (Hudders) Boudonck. Alice and her siblings were first-generation Americans and proud of their Belgium ancestry. Alice was united in marriage to Ferdinand “Fred” Cleppe on Jan. 9, 1941, in Victor, Iowa.

After their marriage they lived a-year-and-a-half in East Moline, Illinois, where Fred worked in the Steel Mill during wartime and Alice became a mother for the first time. They returned to the Tama, Iowa, area where they farmed before moving to their own farm in rural Brownsdale, Minnesota, in 1948. They farmed there until their retirement. Fred passed away on March 17, 2004.
