Ray H. Smith, 91, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Deerwood, Minn., at his home.

Ray, son of Ray C. and Laura (Hustad) Smith, was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Austin, Minn. He graduated from Austin High School in 1939. He finished one year at Austin Junior College and one year at Wabash before entering the Navy where he served from 1941 to 1946. He then attended the University of Minnesota. After graduation, he went to work at Soo Line Railroad and became vice president.

Ray married Patricia Alex. He is survived by his daughter, Nannette (John) Tuthill, Deerwood; five grandchildren; brothers Jim (Avis) Smith, Lakeville, MInn., and Ralph Smith, Springfield, Ohio; sister, Janet (Howard) Borchardt, Austin; brother-in-law, Warren Oppegard, Lincoln, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pat, son Steven, and sisters Carol Oppegard and Peggy List.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 22, 2013, at Koop Funeral Home in Crosby, Minn. If desired, memorials are preferred to the Bob Allison Ataxia Research Center at the University of Minnesota.
