It didn’t go quite as they planned, but the Riverland Community College volleyball team walked away with a five-game win over Western Wisconsin Tech in La Crosse Wednesday.

RCC (1-4 overall) held on to win by scores of 25-13, 18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 20-18 as Austin grad Robin Arjes got a kill and an ace block for the last to points of game five to put away the match.

The Blue Devils weren’t quite ready for what WWTC was bringing to the table.

“I walked in there and looked at them and I thought it would be a cake walk,” RCC head coach Helen Jahr said. “But they were super scrappy. They were digging everything and hitting our weak spots.”

The Blue Devils were able to win the last two games while facing a possible fifth straight loss to open the season.

“We finally cleaned up our act and played like a team in those last two,” Jahr said.

Sophomore Stephanie Loverink led the Blue Devils with 17 kills and 24 digs, Jessica Reuvers had six blocks, Kristin Vesel had 12 set assists and Mercedes Mikayla had 21 digs.
