A look at what’s coming to gaming in summer 2014

Summer will soon be upon us, which means there are some great games coming out over the next few weeks and toward the end of the season. Mid-summer usually isn’t the biggest time for game releases — many people still go outside, contrary to popular opinion, which hampers games sales in June and July.

But there are some really interesting games to get excited about. Aside from some interesting updates like “Murdered: Soul Suspect” and the sequel to the breakout RPG “Tales of Xillia,” these are likely going to be some of the biggest games of the next few months.

“Watch Dogs”

Rated M, May 27

This is likely going to be a breakout game for 2014, as the long-anticipated story of hacker intrigue lets players control their environment by hacking into a city’s digital mainframe to do things like spy on phone calls, affect traffic lights and bridges, and potentially blow things up.

“Watch Dogs” looks like it will be insanely fun, albeit more for older gamers. The game has been pushed back numerous times, so expect a lot of attention on this title once it gets released.

“Mario Kart 8”

Rated E, May 30

The reason to pick up that Nintendo Wii U is coming out at the tail end of May, and not a moment too soon.

The family-friendly party game is an amazing display of awesome racing and hilarious gameplay, and it’s a must-grab for any gamer. Let’s face it: You and I will probably buy a Wii U just for this game, and we will be all too happy to do so.

 “The Evil Within”

Rating pending, Aug. 26

The creator of the “Resident Evil” series has finally come back to the survival horror genre after years of working on influential action games like “Vanquish” and “Godhand.” Not much is known about “The Evil Within,” but the last time Shinji Mikami directed a horror game, we all got “Resident Evil 4.”

That’s a good track record, and it’s reason enough to get excited about this title.

The game features a detective who must fight his way through a supernatural world he stumbled into after examining a murder scene.

 “Destiny”

Rating pending, Sept. 9

Closing out the summer will be the latest game from Bungie, the developer who created the “Halo” series.

This first-person shooting game has a lot of buzz around it and promises to be an incredible online experience, especially since Bungie is putting in a “dynamic” multiplayer option which will throw random situations at gamers.

The game features three character classes and should likely replace whatever shooter you’re playing now.
