Austin Staples closing in May

Austin’s Staples is closing May 17.

A store manager confirmed the store located at 1702 17th St. NW will close, but declined to offer more details. A sign was also posted outside the business.

The news comes after a March announcement that Staples would close 225 stores by 2015.

In response to calls, Staples corporate officials issued a written response to the closing.

“We continually evaluate our store performance to ensure we’re operating the business in the best way,” a Staples spokeswoman wrote in an email. “As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint. We are committed to providing great service and every product businesses need whether it’s in-store, online or through mobile. We are working to provide transfer options where possible.”
