Remembering patriots

Patriot’s Day will be remembered with a bell this Tuesday.

Austin Police and Firefighters will toll a bell on one of the fire engines five times, followed by a moment of silence during a 6 p.m. Patriot’s Day ceremony at Tuesdays on Main.

“It’s to honor all those who served,” said Pamela Hollrah-Asleson, secretary of the Austin chapter of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and Patriot’s Day ceremony coordinator.

Many organizations will come together to pay homage to the men and women who serve the U.S. during the service. The Hormel Spam Girls will be represented by Bleva Fiala, Austin Spam Post Commander, who will give a short speech on what Austin’s Spam Post did for World War II vets. In addition, Dave and Jeanne Wedekind of the Minnesota chapter of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, one of the groups who volunteered for relief efforts after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, will speak about the importance of the holiday as well.

Austin Mayor Tom Stiehm will read a proclamation recognizing the Austin chapter of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.

Patriot’s Day falls on Sept. 11 of every year to serve as a reminder of the Sept. 11 attacks by terrorists who hijacked four planes, crashing two of them into the World Trade Center towers.

The ceremony takes place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Mower County Veteran’s Memorial and should last until 6:30 p.m.
