Rough Riders to host ‘Skate for the Animals’
The Mower County Humane Society is currently home to an incredible group of cats and dogs; some of the nicest we’ve ever had in our shelter.
We frequently ask, “What are they doing here?” We have dogs who know how to sit, stay, and walk well on a leash, indicating that someone made an effort with them at some point in their lives. Knowing that at one time someone loved them is heartbreaking. It would be wonderful to be able to piece together the history of each animal that comes through our door, but this seldom happens. We take them as they are, pick up their pieces, and give them a new start.
Looking for a lost pet can be time-consuming and discouraging. Many people give up too easily. There are many sources available to help. Local animal shelters, including the MCHS, are always willing to post lost or found pet information. Ads can be placed in newspapers. The Austin Police Department runs the city pound, taking in many stray animals. Check with them frequently, not just once. Finally, “SE MN’s Lost/ Found Pet Page” on Facebook is a fantastic resource, as it reaches many people and is linked to many shelters and rescues. Keep looking because animals can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.
People often debate whether it’s better to bring home a puppy or rescue an adult shelter dog. Some think that a true bond can only be forged by raising a dog from “puppyhood.” A lot of people feel that adult dogs are set in their ways, making a true connection difficult. An adult dog entering a new home experiences many of the same anxieties and training issues as a puppy, but with enough love, patience, and training, that bond will be established. The secret is to not give up on the dog or yourself.
On Saturday, April 2, the “Rough Riders 4H Club” will be hosting “Skate for the Animals” to benefit the MCHS at the Rohler Rink in Brownsdale. The event runs 4-7 p.m. and will cost $8 per person, with $4 going to the MCHS. Donations of IAMS dry cat food, IAMS lamb meal and rice dry dog food, bleach, paper towels, strong rope toys for dogs, and “Kongs” for dogs will also be greatly appreciated. Door prizes also will be awarded.
The MCHS is in need of someone to organize and run the annual rummage sale to be held at the fairgrounds June 3-5. There is space available, but we need an energetic, organized chairperson. If you’re interested in helping, please contact the shelter at 507-437-9262 for details.
We are pleased to announce that on Friday, April 22, the “MN SNAP Wagon,” a spay/neuter assistance program, will visit the MCHS parking lot. This mobile veterinary clinic was created by licensed vets to provide same-day, low-cost spay and neuter surgeries to people who qualify. Proof of qualification must be provided with either tax returns showing an income of below $40,000, food stamps, unemployment, or SSD. At this time, there is only space for about 30 cats, with a reduced cost of $40 per neuter and $50 per spay. Call 612-720-8236 for details and appointment information or view the “SNAP” website.
Finally, we gratefully acknowledge donations made in memory of Cindy Welke, “Deuce” Anderson, “Nanni” Raber, “Cookie” Sandell, Faye McFarland, “Opie” Jones, and Donald Walker.
