Area volunteers gave a little love to local seniors Friday.

Several groups organized trips to St. Mark’s Living, Primrose Retirement Community and other area senior homes to give Valentine’s Day cards and treats to Austin’s senior residents.

“It’s one of those paychecks of the heart ,” said Laura Helle, Vision 2020 director of vision creation. “We’ve always said that with Community Pride and Spirit we know that things like this are happening in Austin all the time, but we want to shine a spotlight on it, salute those that do it and inspire others to bring a little love and kindness into their day.”

Groups of kindergartners from Woodson Kindergarten Center’s Kids Korner were at St. Marks to hand out more than 400 cards made by Austin elementary students.

“It was good to do,” said Keagen Duholm.

At the same time, National Honors Society students from Austin High School were at St. Marks to do the same thing. Several students said it’s a tradition to deliver Valentine’s Day cards around town for area seniors.

“We like seeing all the reactions,” Jenna Williamson, AHS senior, said. “Some of these just make couples’ month.”

Helle said the volunteer efforts were a good way to bring more attention to the area.

“Delivering Valentines is just as important as a $50 million community rec center,” she said with a laugh.
