An Austin business owner is looking to bring what he called his vast experience and leadership to the Austin City Council.

Jon Boyer, president and founder of Austin’s Precision Signs, filed Friday to run in Austin’s Third Ward against incumbent Judy Enright.

“I love the community,” he said. “I’ve got children, I’ve been in business and I’m also very involved in the community.”

He is a past president of Austin’s Kiwanis Early Risers Club, a youth leader at Faith Evangelical Free Church, a past Austin Area of Commerce Member and a former rotary member.

“I just think I can bring a lot to the table. … I understand a lot of perspectives: I’m a father, I’m a business owner, involved in the community,” he said.

He and his wife, Anna, have nine children.

Precision Signs, which he started in his basement, now employs about 25 people and has national accounts, including several with AT&T.

Boyer grew up in southern California, where he started a sign business in 1988 before selling the company and moving to Austin to start Precision Signs in 1996. He’s been self-employed for most of his life.

He said he understands various angles of the Austin community.

“I understand the needs of the community as a whole,” he said.

Boyer said several people, including a former council member, encouraged him to run.

People had encouraged Boyer to run in the past. But with only two children at home, Boyer said now was the right time to run.

“I feel inspired to do it,” Boyer said of running.
