Austin drivers will soon find more traffic guidance on a few city roads.

The Austin City Council agreed on traffic control measures to three recommended problem spots Monday night.

During a committee work meeting following the council meeting, the council approved a motion to place school zone signs on Fourth Ave. NW between Fourth Street and Fifth Street. The area is used as a main entrance and bus drop-off for St. Augustine Elementary students.

City Engineer Jon Erichson then advised against a request for designated turn lanes at the Oakland Place and 10th Drive traffic light. The sudden lane shifts it would potentially cause for drivers could make the area more accident prone rather than less, he said. The council motioned for painted arrows that would guide drivers in each lane as to what their options are.

Finally, the council motioned added a stop sign at 18th Street SE and First Avenue, citing the proximity to Neveln School as reason to slow drivers down.

Starting July 1, the city’s stormwater utility fee for residents will rise to $4 per month, up from $2.50. The funds will go toward building infrastructure like storm sewers and catch basins, maintenance on these systems and removing pollutants from the water. Commercial properties will see a proportional change.

The council granted the city’s Planning and Zoning Department the authority to contract for the removal of junk and illegally stored vehicles from five Austin properties:
