Bail set at $200K for mother of injured toddler

Heang Kim Sean, the mother of a severely injured Austin toddler, appeared in court Friday on first- and third-degree assault charges.

Sean, 21, was arrested and charged by criminal complaint Thursday. District Judge Fred Wellmann set her bail at $200,000, or $100,000 with conditions.

According to a court complaint, Sean allegedly caused injuries to her now 18-month-old daughter that included liver lacerations, bruising of the intestinal wall and spleen, pancreas damage and blood in the abdomen.

The child was in the hospital from Aug. 12 to Oct. 3, according to the complaint. In that time, she had a blood transfusion and surgery to remove a section of her small intestine.

Sean has denied causing the injuries to the child.

If Sean bails out of jail, she must not have contact with minors or her daughter, must submit to random chemical testing, must have weekly check-ins with Mower County Corrections and must not contact any witnesses, including her boyfriend.

Her next court appearance is Oct. 27, when she will enter a plea to the felony charges.

The presumptive sentence for first-degree assault is prison, according to the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.
