Local student wins fourth in art contest
A local student recently won a very aerodynamic contest.
Jocilynn Holtorf of Southgate Elementary won fourth place in the ages 6 to 9 category in the 2016 Minnesota Aviation Art Contest for students ages 6-17.
The winning entries will be featured in the 2017 Minnesota Aviation Art Calendar. Winners in each age category will also receive certificates for a 30-minute introductory flight at their local airport and a winner’s certificate.
An official award ceremony will take place March 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Metropolitan Airports Commission building in Minneapolis. The first- through third-place winning artworks in each category level will be sent to Washington, D.C., to compete at the national level.
Winners there will proceed to the International Aviation Art Contest, which is an event of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. The event is co-sponsored by the National Association of State Aviation Officials Center for Aviation Research and Education and the National Aeronautics Association.
The Minnesota Aviation Art Contest, sponsored by MnDOT’s Office of Aeronautics, helps students learn about aviation through designing art based on the year’s selected theme, which was “Flight in Harmony with Nature.” The Metropolitan Airports Commission also provide support to the contest.
