MacPhail Center for Music opening enrollment for spring

MacPhail Center for Music has announced open enrollment for spring semester in Austin.

Spring semester runs from Feb. 1 to June 12.  Individual lessons and diverse group classes for all ages are now accepting registrations — group class registration closes Feb.4.

What MacPhail is offering for spring

 Individual Lessons

MacPhail offers individual music lessons on 13 instruments and voice for children and adults in Austin. All music lessons are student-centered to develop musical and technical skills, personalized to each students’ goals and learning ability. Individuals fill out a student profile form to learn about their goals and needs. Lessons are available on: Baritone, Upright Bass, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, Acoustic Guitar, Percussion, Piano, Trombone, Tuba, Saxophone, Violin, Viola and Voice.

 Group Classes (see end of release for full group classes list)

In group classes, individuals can develop their playing in a relaxed, collaborative environment with like-minded peers. In Austin, group piano class and group guitar will be available for children as well as a group piano class for adults.

All Group Offerings:
Jazz Combo –Jazz is a uniquely American art form that is treasured around the world. Jazz is spontaneous and fun; it expands the imagination and sharpens the mind. The positive environment of the Jazz Combo is perfect to develop your skills as an improvising musician while working with other musicians of similar skill level.

 Bucket Drumming

An urban phenomenon found all over the world, bucket drumming enables people to make music without requiring an instrument at home. Music can be a powerful and effective outlet for the development of social interaction, attention, motor skills, and self-expression. This group will focus on adaptive bucket drumming in a group setting.

 Beginning Group Piano, 8-12

Through games, singing, movement, listening and composition, small groups of children will learn basic piano skills and musicianship.  Practice time and access to a piano or keyboard are necessary.

 Beginning Group Piano, 13 and over

Learn easy sight-reading, improvisation to accompany melodies and easy classical and popular songs. Build keyboard skills through note-reading, ear training, playing by ear, improvising, transposing and individual and ensemble playing. Practice time and access to a piano or keyboard are necessary.

 Guitar for Children, 8-12

Beginning guitar students will learn to play and enjoy the guitar using notes and chords, a variety of strum and picking patterns, and be able to play practiced pieces with others in the group and alone at times in this relaxed atmosphere. With practice at home and new techniques each class, students will become independent musicians with a strong music foundation. You must provide your own acoustic or electric guitar and course book. Advanced students may schedule private lessons.

 Guitar for Teens, 13-18
