Council to discuss feral cats, citations

The Austin City Council may help the Mower County Humane Society look at ways to address feral cats.

During a work session Monday night, the council is slated to discuss feral cat program models in other cities. Kelly Rush of the Mower County Humane Society said shelter volunteers are interested in implementing a similar program and have had several inquiries from Austin residents interested in a program for their neighborhood.

The Austin City Council is also set to discuss the 2015 audit, demolition of two homes, 2016 election judges and more at its regular meeting, at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the council chambers of City Hall. The work session will follow the regular meeting.

The council will also review three variances requested from residents and businesses, including a fence appeal submitted by Hormel Foods Corp.

It is scheduled to grant an on-sale liquor license to El Maguey Bar.

In the work session, Planning and Zoning Administrator Holly will discuss the concept of administrative citations. Several other cities in Minnesota have the power to do this and it’s used as an alternate method of enforcement.

It could include issuing compliance letters, time extensions, repeat offenders who may see increased fines and exceptions to issuing compliance letters.

It will discuss how and when to issue citations and what action should be taken if the problem isn’t fixed, which could mean filing a criminal court case.

City Administrator Craig Clark will discuss the Welcoming America program. This program offers tools, resources and a national network to help nonprofit and government partners transform communities into more welcoming places, the brochure said.
