Hurm: Erichson may lead HRA

The city may not have to look far for a new HRA executive director.

At the committee work session following the meeting, City Administrator Jim Hurm told the council he was exploring the idea of hiring City Engineer Jon Erichson as part-time executive director of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority. Hurm currently holds the position in addition to his roles as city administrator and executive director of the Port Authority.

“I am convinced Jon has the ability to provide strong leadership and stability that would keep the HRA running smoothly,” Hurm said in a memo to the council he presented in person. “Jon is originally from Austin and knows Austin like no one else.” He added Erichson is considering retiring as city engineer, and would be interested in the position.

“It sounds like a perfect fit for us,” said Mayor Tom Stiehm.

Council Member Brian McAlister said he was uncomfortable at the proposal and that he was unaware why the HRA needed a director separate from Hurm.

“I’ve not heard anything from the HRA,” McAlister said.

Roger Boughton, a member of both the council and the HRA committee, agreed to bring a report from the HRA in the future. The exact process for Erichson’s hire, if decided, is yet to be determined.
