On May 17, more than 400 people gathered at Riverland Community College’s Frank W. Bridges Theatre to honor one local family’s musical roots. Now that show is about to hit the small screen.

KSMQ Public Television will air the Hanson Family and Friends Concert five times in September: at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 13, at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15 and 18, and at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 20.

KSMQ and the Riverland Community College Foundation partnered to organize the show to honor the legacies of Olaf “Fiddlin’ Ole” Hanson, a well-known musician and instrument repairman who died in 2007, and his wife, Maxine.

The show featured the music of Ole and Maxine’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. Eleven groups performed in the show, which featured a finale by 36 family members.

For the final song, the Hansons sang “You Are My Sunshine” with the audience.

KSMQ and the foundation collected more than $3,300 in freewill donations.

DVDs of the show will be available at KSMQ during an upcoming pledge drive. DVDs will be offered to people who pledge at the $80 level during the drive.

KSMQ officials have said they hope to organize a similar show next year.
