Red Cedar Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution

The Red Cedar Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, met at the home of Marilyn Prenosil on April 10.

The messages of the President General Lynn Forney Young and Minnesota State Regent Diane L. Cone were read by Judy Brown. Marilyn Prenosil read the National Defense Report which included considerable information about the Wounded Warriors Project.

Discussions included the Civilian Conservation Corp, American Indian information from Bacone College and the upcoming commemorative event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day.

President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday on May 20, 1914. On this day, we honor our own mothers, and in particular our Gold Star and Blue Star Mothers.

Diane L. Cone, Minnesota State Regent, was our honored guest. The Minnesota State Project is “To Digitize the MNSSDAR Records.”

The 119th MNSSDAR State Conference will be held May 16 – 18, in Duluth. Terry Donovan presented Diane Cone with a copy of the “Fine Home on Water Street”, a history of George A. and Lillian Hormel’s family life. Lillian Hormel was a member of the Red Cedar Chapter.

Marilyn Prenosil presented the program, “Susan Salisbury and the American Indian Women Lace Makers”. In the late 1800s Bishop Henry Whipple helped develop a national program to train Indian women in the art of lace making. Miss Salisbury was one of the teachers who worked with the Indian women as they made the lovely hand-made lace.

A sample of this very fine thread lace fashioned by the skillful fingers of Indian women was on display at this meeting.

The next meeting will be held on May 1 at The Cedars. The program will be on “Wellness and Aging.” Our theme for 2013 – 2016 is “Honoring our Heritage, Focusing on the Future, and Celebrating America.”

 Y’s Women

Y’s Women met April 10 at the Hormel Historic Home. Roger Boughton was the program speaker.  He spoke of how Austin is changing and gave interesting facts on housing, income, employment, workforce, schools and racial diversity in our city.

After a short business meeting, dessert was served by the hostesses, Donna Maas and Jane Helfrich.

The last meeting of the season will be May 8 with a pot-luck supper at 5:30 p.m. Hy-Vee will present the program.
